Generous Donation Received By Former Professor
Orange Coast College recently received a very generous donation from a former professor. Mary McChesney worked at the college for many years and recently donated one million dollars to the college planetarium that will fund a pendulum called Foucault. It will be built to demonstrate the rotation of Earth. It will be the only attraction of its kind and is specially formed to be built at the college. McChesney has always had a passion for education and takes great pride in assisting with foundations within the community. McChesney retired as a professor in 1983. She has over 33 years of experience working at the college teaching English and Spanish. Her passion has always been to help within the community and she loved to teach. The donation is greatly appreciated by OCC and will be used in a very good manner. The planetarium began construction in 2016 and should be finished in 2018. The existing one was actually built in the 1950s but will be torn down to make room for the new one. With all of the changes in technology a new planetarium was definitely essential. The new planetarium is set to offer space for many visitors including kindergarten through 12th grade. The overall project should cost around $20 million and they have received approximately $2.6 million in donations so far.
