Russell Gimelstob was born and raised in New Vernon, New Jersey and received his first racket when he was just six. As the son of a star athlete, his father was particularly proud when he enrolled in his alma mater, Newark Academy, and joined the tennis team as a freshman. As an academic all American, he went on to become team captain during his last year of college and he won a slew of all-ivy awards and other academic achievements.
